Environmental Features of Golden Whip Stream

Golden Whip Gorge is the core area of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a natural sandstone canyon stream that meanders through a quartz sandstone peak forest with a vertical drop of nearly 1,074 metres. It is a UNESCO-certified biosphere reserve inhabited by the critically endangered Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus), which makes it a tourist development area as well as a protection zone for the endangered species. Although it is a tourist development area, 83% of the stream is currently off-limits to humans, and only 17% of the area is open to tourists for hiking.
