Exploring the Filming Locations of “Journey to the West” in Zhangjiajie
After visiting Yangjiajie yesterday, today I arrived at Huangshi Village, Yuanjiajie, and Golden Whip Stream—iconic filming locations for the classic TV series Journey to the West. Huangshi Village is one of the five must-see routes in Zhangjiajie’s Wulingyuan Scenic Area. A well-known local saying goes: “If you don’t visit Huangshi Village, your trip to Zhangjiajie is in vain.” Even the billboards at the train station proudly display this slogan to highlight its fame. And indeed, Huangshi Village lived up to its reputation.

From the moment I set foot in Zhangjiajie, I felt as though I had stepped into a dreamlike fairyland—a sacred filming site for Journey to the West, where every inch of scenery seemed imbued with mythical charm.
My first stop was Huangshi Village. As I ascended along the winding mountain path, the surrounding peaks appeared like masterpieces meticulously carved by nature. Standing atop Huangshi Village and gazing into the distance, I saw endless rolling mountains—some sharp as swords piercing the sky, others graceful like celestial maidens. Amid the swirling mist, I could almost envision Sun Wukong (the Monkey King) somersaulting through the clouds, locked in battle with demons. The crystal-clear sky, set against the bizarre rock formations, left me mesmerized by the grandeur and ethereal beauty of the landscape.
Next, I ventured into Yuanjiajie. Stepping into this mystical land felt like entering a fantasy world. The “First Bridge Under Heaven” spanned between two towering peaks like a giant dragon soaring across the horizon, its weathered surface whispering tales of time. Standing on the bridge, with the mountain breeze brushing against my face, I marveled at nature’s artistry. The “Enchanting Terrace” was even more captivating—looking down from the platform, the jagged peaks, bathed in sunlight, created a mesmerizing play of light and shadow, as if luring away one’s very soul. Every corner of Yuanjiajie seemed like a hidden grotto from Journey to the West, where immortals or monsters might emerge at any moment.
Finally, I strolled along Golden Whip Stream. The babbling water was so clear that I could see the pebbles beneath and tiny fish darting about. Lush greenery lined the banks, with vines weaving a dense emerald net among the trees. As I walked, the symphony of birdsong and flowing water enveloped me like a soothing melody. The towering Golden Whip Rock, gleaming under the sunlight like a divine staff, evoked images of Sun Wukong’s legendary Ruyi Jingu Bang (magic staff). For a moment, I could almost see the pilgrimage of Tang Sanzang and his disciples—Sha Wujing carrying their luggage, Zhu Bajie waddling along, Sun Wukong scanning the surroundings vigilantly, and the benevolent Tang Sanzang leading the way.

Huangshi Village, Yuanjiajie, and Golden Whip Stream—these Journey to the West filming locations—transported me into a world of fantasy with their unique charm. Every landscape rekindled childhood memories of the beloved tale while showcasing nature’s unparalleled creativity. With a heart full of nostalgia, I reluctantly bid farewell to this dreamlike wonderland, but its beauty will forever be etched in my memory.
